Summary

Its application aims at subdiving the image into its constituent parts or objects. At present, there exist various techniques to carry this out. This paper proposes a new image segmenting method, called BPNn-CPN, based on Artificial Neural Networks, which combines the use of Back-propagation (BPN) and Counter-propagation (CPN) architectures. Even though each architecture’s characteristics and capacities are widely known, their individual performance is not suitable for solving this kind of problems. The BPNn-CPN method here posed bases its performance on the combination of small networks which carry out the segmenting process with a shorter training time, thus achieving an improvement in the system performance. BPNn-CPN has been applied to the solution of various segmentation problems over grey scale images with really successful results, proving itself to have the capacity of the BPN but with a much shorter computational time. Finally, some conclusions and future lines of work are presented. Red de Universidades con Carreras en Informática (RedUNCI)
