Summary

The archaeological evidence from the southern portion of the Yocavil Valley indicates that pre-Hispanic craftsmen utilized, among other methods, lost-wax casting in the manufacture of metal objects. The rareness in the use of this technique in some Andean regions has been explained by the absence of environments which are adequate for the life of stingless bees, considered the exclusive providers of the necessary wax for the manufacture of models. Taking into account that in the Yocavil Valley ideal conditions for these insects were not present, it is supported that the artisans had alternative sources of wax. To this effect, the possibility of the use of the “retamo”, a plant of broad availability in the region, is emphasized. An experimental foundry was implemented for the purpose of observing the behavior of its wax in this special technology. Sociedad Argentina de Antropología
