Summary

The Continuous Cooling Transformation diagram of the ASTM A335 P91 steel presents two basic microestructural domains at lowtemperatures: ferritic and martensitic; their limits depend on the cooling conditions from the austenite as the mother phase. For particular conditions and a certain range of chemical compositions, the martensitic transformation could not be completely fulfilled, causing a non-negligible percentage of the metaestable retained austenite phase in the final microstructure. In the present work the presence of the retained austenite at RT was determined after exposing the samples of the P91 steel to thermal programs that included continuous cooling stages at different rates (between 90 and 160 °C/h), starting from the austenitic field. For the characterization the hyperfine parameters were measured by Mössbauer Spectroscopy (MES) and the results were complemented by an X-ray diffraction analysis and observations from optical and scanning electron microscopy. Particularly MES is very useful in terms of the capacity to detect minor phases; besides it can distinguish between martensite or ferrite from austenite, due to their markedly different characteristic hyperfine patterns (magnetic and paramagnetic, respectively), more accurately than other techniques. From the MES results it was possible to estimate the retained austenite fraction for the diverse cooling rates as well as to determine the presence of precipitates of the (Fe, Cr)3C type; In addition, the different environments of the Fe atoms were determined due to the substitution of Cr as a major alloy in this type of steels.
