A description by sex, age and area of occurance of the incidence of skin cancer cases reported to the Costa Rican National Registry of Tumors for the period of 1979- 1950 is given. Skin cancer represented 7.6% of all the cancer cases reposed in 1979 and 14.5% of those reported in 1980. It was the second most frequent form of cancer in 1980, gastric cancer being the first. The provinces of San Jose, Alajuela and Heredia have the greatest incidence and Guanacaste the least. The presence of this cancer was reported highest among patients over 55 pears of age. The basocellular carcinoma is the most frequent in the country and it appeared predominantly in the centrofacial area. The epidermoide cancer is found most often as the face and arms, and the melanoma primarily affects the legs. We consider necessary to continue epidermiologic studies in order to better understand the problem of skin cancer in Costa Rica.
